So long my first bass. You're so pretty. Too bad...
Played another gig last week on bass for my friend Jana Pochop at Ruta Maya here in town. Good thing we got together a few hours beforehand to run some tunes - because my “new” T-40 was sounding like ass. Terrible intonation, plucky sound, a downright hot mess. full day
put in a full day of recording on saturday and got some shizz done. still working on flowers. it’s gonna be out there. In a good way. I am jazzed jazzed jazzed.
day one recording: done
got placeholder beats in, acoustic guitar down & scratch vocals. now we’re tweaking for the right voice treatment - and we’re close-ish. lots more to do on this one, but for the first time since we set out to do this record, we “made music”. Nice!
T-minus 2 days
until we start recording. First up is Flowers, a tune I’ve had kicking around for a while. It’s one of the “quirkier” tunes but probably has the fewest question marks / growing-up to do thus, a good starting point. I have an original living room demo from a year or two ago, but am looking forward to pushing boundaries and ultimately finding “the sound” for this...

Have songs
6 to be exact. We need 5. So I’m considering this working in abundance (which Dan predicted we would be) and I feel grateful. Cool. Of course there’s tweaking still to do and I’ll be working my ass off wrangling with this damn guitar, but it’s nice to get a glimpse of progress.

It’s too early to make assumptions about what the record will or won’t be, but there are a few things I’m pretty sure of:
1) It’s most probably be an EP
2) May contain a co-write — or two
3) And will be produced by Dan Barrett (Porter Davis & Red Leaf School of Music co-founder), about which I am so pleased.

dive in
The thing about blogging is that it gives a sense that you have an audience. That someone somewhere may be watching, and may even care — even if it’s only in hope or illusion. Otherwise there can be this unshakable feeling that art is happening in a vacuum. And that can be lonely.
So as I embark on this album project and commit to it’s completion, I’m going to try out this...
